I was inspired to create these meatballs after attending a social gathering that was unable to really cater for my dairy and gluten free needs. It was one of those parties where you all bring a dish; sandwiches, crisps that sort of thing, but as a result of poor planning I hadn’t managed to buy anything or prepare anything at home that would be suitable and so I ended up just taking some soup.

I noticed on someone else’s plate some cold turkey meatballs. I had no idea exactly what was in them and to be honest they looked highly processed and so I’m not sure that I want to know what was in them but it occurred to me that although they looked a bit rough around the edges a cold turkey meatball, homemade and pimped with herbs and spices, could be a taste sensation, a filling snack, packed with protein to keep me going throughout the day. Definitely better than grabbing a bag of crisps or resorting to the highly processed shop bought equivalent.

I kept the recipe really simple in terms of flavours and processes as rolling lots of meatballs can be a tiring and repetitive process for us fibro foodies. Another top tip is that I regularly hard boil half a dozen, large organic eggs for 7 minutes before cooling ice cold water. I then store them in the fridge and have them as snacks during the week, sometimes pairing them with the meatballs and some salad for a lazy breakfast.

Prep Time: 10-15 minutes Cooking Time: 15-20 minutes


  • Coconut oil, avocado oil or olive oil
  • 150g pork mince, preferably organic
  • 150g turkey mince, preferably organic
  • ¼ teaspoon ground white pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon dried marjoram
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano or dried sage
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon paprika (omit for nightshade free)
  • 2 tablespoons hemp seed (or gluten free breadcrumbs)



Preheat oven 180°C fan. Grease a fairly large baking dish with a little oil.


Place the pork and turkey mince in a large mixing bowl. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix to combine. I find it easier to use my hands, but it is perfectly okay to use a spoon or spatula if you would prefer.


Once the ingredients are thoroughly combined take small amounts of the mixture and roll into meatballs between the palms of your hands, measuring approximately the size of a walnut. Place onto the greased baking dish.


Once you have used all the mixture, transfer to the oven and cook for approximately 15-20 minutes, or until the juices run clear. Turn the meatballs halfway through the cooking time.


Serve with free from condiments of your choice, I particularly like them with my easy to prepare Paleo sweet chilli sauce.


FIBRO FOOD FAIRY TIP: I have used both pork and turkey mince. The addition of the pork is to prevent the meatballs from being too dry. However, it is entirely up to you why not experiment with your own favourite flavours.
